How long does it take to heal from gum grafting?

The average healing time for gum grafting treatment is seven to 14 days. However, some patients may heal more quickly or need more time to recover fully. Your oral health is unique, and your dentist can discuss expectations and goals for your specific case, treatment and recovery based on your surgery type, lifestyle and more.

What to Expect After Gum Grafting

During your recovery, our team will provide you with a special, postoperative toothbrush to gently and safely clean your teeth near the treatment site. Two weeks after the gum grafting procedure, we invite patients to arrange a follow-up dental appointment with the dentist to ensure everything is healing correctly. The appointment is also an opportunity to check the patient’s overall progress and look for any signs of infection or other issues.

Because your mouth may feel sore during recovery, we recommend only eating soft, cool foods. Some approved foods are eggs, yoghurt, cottage cheese, mashed bananas and ice cream. To prevent soft tissue irritation, we recommend avoiding crunchy, sharp and hot foods and beverages, such as coffee, hot soups, hard candies and potato chips.
